From 1995 to 2008 I worked as a scientist lecturing and doing research in the genetics of bacteria and viruses…. and since then I have been working as a fulltime artist… but I don’t see much difference between the two disciplines.. both ask questions about the world we live in… its just the approaches are a little bit different…
I paint in the studio.. and much of these paintings tell a story… the story is a non-linear thing which I like to leave to the viewer to interpret.. if they feel like it… but I have come to realise that a painting has got to work on this narrative level.. but above all a painting is an abstract thing… with colours shapes and lines… and thus the ‘story’ plane of the painting must work with the abstract compositional plane as well.. the way these planes interact.. the tension they create.. is what for me makes a good painting…
Since 2010.. I have done much of my paintings on the streets of Sydney… and just recently Hyderabad, India… where I have loved the different energy provided by these experiences… I have found that it is great to get clues and ideas from the world around me rather than always depending on the stories and images in my head…'
