Thong is a successful artist who supports his art practice by teaching, by illustrating children's books, amateurishly dabbling in the developing stock market and as a freelance graphic designer.

"Thong is 26 and is in the third studio he's had since I've known him. The last was a work space, a bedroom loft and small courtyard on the river side of the Red River dyke. The neighbour kept a couple of pigs so squeals and grunts sometimes filtered through. It burnt down last winter and some salvaged canvases look as though they've hung in an Italian chapel since the Renaissance. After a stint at home he's just rented a light and airy set of rooms near the University of Industrial Fine Arts, at the end of a long, narrow alley that's just wide enough for a motorbike to scrape down. He has just moved in and hasn't had time to set up a lacquer workspace to produce the exquisite small portraits that sell well in Vietnam. His biographical acrylic abstracts that were saved from the smoke are stacked with new series of pagoda guardians and some salvaged frog stall pictures, their red plastic stools still dancing."
