Artist Statement
I was born in Sydney into a non English speaking family. At the age of 6 we moved to Germany where we settled into a beautiful small German village. When I was 10 my father took his final pastoral position with the Trinity Church in Melbourne and my challenge was to learn to master the English language.
After high school I switched between studies in Engineering, Surveying and Nursing and then finally settled into Teaching. I accepted some adventurous postings like teaching in the Simpson Desert, in a community called Alpurrurulam. From here my next position was in Jabiru, Kakadu National Park.
In 1998 we moved back to Brisbane where I made up my mind to challenge my inner passion of painting.
I enrolled in art classes at the Brisbane Institute of Art and received the college’s Metcalf award in 2004. I also received High commendation award at the Pine Rivers Art Awards and a special mention book prize at the Churchie Emerging art Exhibition in 2007.
For a few years I received mentoring from Warren Palmer who has helped me gain direction and purpose in my now full time commitment as an artist.
I paint about what I see in suburbia in Brisbane. My works are like visual chronicles about the things that I see when I go about my life. The paintings incorporate these, often unremarkable, scenes and hope to accentuate their relevance. Then using small irrelevant objects like chip packets, dogs or draping cloths I develop subthemes hoping to create even more intimacy between my stories and audience.
