David Sayer has been a practicing artist for over twenty years. Born in Sydney, he trained at the College of Fine Arts as a painter and is represented in private and public collections both in Australia and in Europe.

Through drawing and painting, and often exploring the use of mixed media, David is drawn to the play of texture and light in his landscapes. He explores the urban environment, places often overlooked as transient and without worth. David's work imbues a solitude that has been a recurring theme and which continues to exert a fascination for him. His influences are those artists that have similar stillness. Edward Hopper, Russell Drysdale, artists who have worked with their surrounds as a metaphor for their experiences.
David has had numerous solo and group exhibitions and has twice been included in the Salon Des Refuses, the alternative Archibald and Wynne Prize Exhibition. In the last two years, he has been a finalist in six national exhibitions in Townsville, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth including the 2008 Australian National Maritime Art prize.

David has taught art at both secondary and tertiary level and is currently working towards his PhD in Fine Arts.

My work contains the urban spaces and ground that is often seen as wasteland. Empty spaces that are travelled through rather than dwelt upon. Industrial areas, railway sidings, even the bottom of ones own yard, spaces that are moved through with little concern for the time spent. Through painting and drawing I explore this space and the figures that pass through it. The love of texture in both mediums characterizes the work and provides a vehicle for this direction.
