Bilgola Plateau artist, Bruce Harkness was born in New York of Australian parents, and spent his childhood years in California, where at school, he was encouraged to develop his colourful drawings of the imagination. His family later relocated to Sydney, where he completed high school studies and commenced a university degree in architecture. Soon afterwards, however, he discovered the creative freedom of the advertising industry, which enabled him to utilise his visualising skills, and he went on to a successful career as an advertising agency copywriter and art director here in Sydney, as well as in the UK, Belgium and the US...and later as a freelance creative consultant and graphic designer.
During all this time, however, he nurtured the idea of one day, becoming simply and purely, an artist. So, he pursued his interest in art and painting by attending evening courses in oil painting and life drawing at East Sydney Technical College (now The National Art School), and still-life painting in acrylics at The Royal Art Society... and also attended classes for three years under the tutelage of artist, Sarah Aylward... "these being the classes that gave me a belief in my creative potential". Since 1998 he has exhibited regularly, has won many high commendations, and has established himself in private collections, both here and in the US and the UK.
Bruce works in the privacy of his home studio, mostly in acrylics on canvas, and sometimes with oil pastels over acrylics on textured watercolour paper. His paintings of actual locations have been described as idealistic interpretations ... even surreal. Other times, he may simply invent a concept or a location in his imagination. He is noted for his refined sense of light, colour and composition, and is a skilled draughtsman.
"At the moment, I do not put people into my landscapes, with the notion that the viewer will be drawn into the painting itself. What I want to make distinctive is an engaging feeling of peace and quiet mystique". As well as his noted landscapes, he is looking to explore more "universal" ideas as this journey unfolds.
Bruce has exhibited and sold works at numerous galleries throughout NSW, is continuously an exhibiting member of The Royal Art Society, The Ku-Ring-Gai Art Society, and The Mosman Art Society. Closer to home, his work has been exhibited over the past 11 years at the Newport Artworks Gallery, Newport Beach, on Sydney's Northern Peninsula.
